Skateboarding is a sport with a relatively young history, long before half-pipe and quarter-pipe, skate ramp kits existed. The sport began in the 1950’s in California by surfers taking it to the next level on the streets. The first commercial skateboards hit the marketplace in 1959. These older boards were made of hard wood, and used clay wheels to roll on. In 1963 big name companies began to hold skateboard contests--offering prizes and cash to the founders of this new sport for their creativity and their skateboard tricks. In the early 1970’s, Frank Nasworthy made a great discovery- creating urethane wheels for the skateboards, rather the dangerous old clay.
This new invention would change the way skateboards are used even today! Famous names such as Tony Alva, Jay Adams, and Stacy Peralta, a.k.a. the Zephyr Team, become known in the mid 1970’s along the coast of California winning all skateboard contests. In 1978, Alan Gelfand who carried the nickname Ollie invented the trick called “ollie”. The Ollie is used for about every trick even today. In 1984, Stacy Peralta and George Powell formed the skateboard team, Bones Brigade, including, Steve Cabellero, Mike McGill, Tony Hawk, and Rodney Mullen. The 1990’s brought us the x-games and skateboarding was pushed even further. New tricks were established, skating pools, vert ramps, and all courses of street.
Multi billion dollar companies became to come forth; Birdhouse, Adio, Chocolate, Element, Emerica, Etnies, Ezekial, Girl, Four Star, Independent, Lost, Matix, RVCA, Von Zipper and Zoo York. New age skateboarders are recognized as; Andy Macdonald, Bob Burnquist, Tony Hawk, Buck Lasek, Danny Way, Neal Hendrix, Renton Millar, Sandro Dias, Bam Margera and Ryan Sheckler. There are now 12.5 million skateboarders in America, 85% are under the age of 18, 74% are boys. As public skate parks became more and more popular, so did the construction of residential skateboard ramps. Half-pipes, quarter-pipes, launch ramps, and grind boxes become a must for any skater. In 1997, my father and I built my own personal quarter pipe. It was a mini ramp. Everyone loved to skate it. All the neighborhood kids came over everyday, having skateboard contests and pushing new tricks. Soon, the kids wanted this same ramp for their own home.
That’s when it all began! My brother and I began to construct these quarter pipes identical to the first we built. It was a cookie-cutter ramp! Here in Huntington Beach, Orange County, we have plenty of skateboarders and parents who support this sport, many ramps were sold directly here in Surf City, H.B. The demand got so high; we had to develop a way to create these ramps in a speedy manner. We decided to pre-cut and pre-drill every half-pipe or quarter-pipe ramp and box it up for the client to install himself. This skateboard ramp kit was the evolution of our current day company. OC Ramps Inc. became an official company in 2005. Several warehouses were leased out in Orange County to begin producing these new skateboard ramp kits and ship them nationwide. We sell several sizes of quarter pipes, grind boxes, and one standard size half pipe.
We mass-produce these items with different types of plywood, screws, 2x4’s, and 2x3’s. A very large machine electronically cuts the transition portion of the half-pipe ramp using a laser. This transition piece is a perfect cut and slope every time! Skateboarding is extremely large nationwide, but our top selling areas include, California, Florida, and the East coast. We are currently the largest manufacturer for skateboard ramps in the world. Skateboarding is an amazing sport, we invite all skaters/skateboarders worldwide to enjoy what they do and skate what they love! |
