Building a Dream Backyard Mini Ramp in Silicon Valley
About a decade ago, we built a 16-foot wide mini ramp for a family in the Redwood City area. The dad—an executive at EA Sports—wanted a ramp for his young son who was just starting to skate. Fast forward to today, that same kid is nearly pro-level and competing in the X Games!
Turns out, word of mouth travels fast. While at work, the CEO of EA mentioned he wanted a custom ramp for his own son, who’s an avid skater. Our original client jumped in and said, “You’ve got to call OC Ramps—they’re the best.” One quick call later, and we were planning the next epic build.

We hopped on a flight up to Northern California to do a full site visit. Tyler Large, owner of OC Ramps, personally met with the family to take measurements and talk design. Their goal: a premium ramp that matched the custom-built home’s aesthetics, especially the rich wood paneling throughout the property.

Once the design was finalized, we got to work in the warehouse. The ramp was to be 5 feet tall, 14 feet wide, and 35 feet long—with a 6.5-foot corner extension and extended platform deck. The customer requested all pressure-treated lumber and marine-grade plywood topped with Skatelite Pro for a buttery smooth ride.

After a month of production, we hit the road with a trailer full of materials. Day one, the crew framed the entire ramp. Day two, we started laying down the marine-grade plywood. And because skating never sleeps—Google HQ (just down the road) invited us for a session on the custom ramp we built for them in 2022. Of course we dropped in, even after two long days on the job.

By days three and four, the final layers of Skatelite and custom vertical paneling were installed.

With coordination of the other contractors for final paint/stain and a stainless steel railing, the end result? A seamless blend of backyard skate paradise and modern architectural style.

Before we packed up, we had one last session with the client’s son and a group of local skaters. Watching them shred and smile was the cherry on top. It reminded us why we do this—building top-tier ramps and spreading stoke, one backyard at a time.

If you're dreaming of your own backyard skate oasis, let’s talk. We'll help bring your vision to life with a setup that's both functional and beautiful.
