How to Build a Skateboard Ramp

There are several things to know about building your own skateboard ramp. Whether it be a halfpipe, quarter pipe, grind box, vert ramp or any other mini ramp; the initial idea appears to be quite easy. Unfortunately, this is not the case. We will begin to review the main issues people face in buidling your own skate ramp and how our company has resolved them. One of the most difficult challenges in building a skate ramp is the slope, aka the transition. The transition holds high value due to the fact it cannot be too steep, nor too mellow. If the ramp is too steep, now you have a ramp that turns into a verticle wall. Too mellow, and you’ve got yourself a simple launch ramp! Most ramps hold a mathmatical ratio to develop this perfect transition. The height of the ramp is a huge part of the equation.

To eliminate such a hassle, OC Skateboard Ramps have their transitions blueprinted to a computer router. No hand can create such a perfectly smooth cut!

The second biggest obsticle in created your own ramp is how to lay the coping. The coping is typically a metal tube that is anywhere between 1-3 inches in diameter. This coping is used to grind and do tricks. Every sport uses a coping for their ramp- BMX, In-line skating, scooters and skateboards. To cut corners and make a terrible mistake, some people use PVC pipe for the coping—not recommended at all! Where the coping will lay is important because you do not want it to stick out too much, nor be too recessed. Remember, the primary purspose of the coping is to grind, not to be hidden nor become a hurdle.

Get ready to dust off your ole’ chalk-line. Once the transition is up and your coping is set, now its time to lay down the plywood or whatever skating surface you’d like to use. (Masonite is not recommended. It reality, it’s a glorified cardboard.) As you lay down the plywood and screw it in, you will need a chalk-line to make sure you’re drilling into the 2x4 supports.
