Pop-up Skate Park at US Open Huntington Beach
Downtown Surf City aka Huntington Beach, CA
Success from Gnarlytown was a hit which lead to our number being forwarded to Got Milk ad agency for "Bones love Milk" the new brand for action sports; such as surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding etc. The Got Milk team contacted us and wanted help to elevate their gym & do a full take over! The vision was to create a pop-up skate park at their downtown Huntington Beach headquarters during the 2019 US Open.
The US Open is sponsored by our friends at Vans, which happens to put on one of the largest surf competition & lifestyle expo. Showcasing all of the top surfers, skaters & BMX riders with handfuls of retail fun and tons of samples from industry brands, including Vans. The event is free to attend for everyone which typically draws in over 1 million people to Huntington Beach.
The Bones Love Milk agency HQ is located at the old Edwards Movie theater that is above the Huntington Surf & Sport (HSS) in the prime of the US Open. Arriving to our first meeting on location is exactly where we made our grass roots and spent many childhood summers, so being at the old hangout spot was very nostalgic! The gym space was a full size basketball court with beautiful flooring; which was their main concern to protecting.
Once the green light was given to our crew the guys quickly started fabrication and painting in the warehouse a week before the installation. The morning of, the crew met up and locked two over size trailers onto the trucks and headed for downtown HB. Having 8 color schemes to paint the obstacles and match the 8,000 square foot mural was cake, the hardest part was the installation process as the crew had to carry everything up two flights of very step staircases! Our trailers pretty much blocked off Main Street as the crew unloaded as quickly as possible. Many people were very curious as to what we were doing. After a few hours and a million calories burned the course was unloaded on the 2nd floor, let the building begin.
Our guys brought in a ton of plywood sheets painted black for the flooring. Once the sheets were laid the metal half pipe & street course was next. The half pipe we installed was our 4ft tall by 16ft wide by 26ft long metal ramp, which is our standard metal ramp used for rentals. The street obstacles were two 16ft wide by 3.5ft tall quarter pipes, 3ft tall custom bank ramp (Stay tuned, we will be selling these soon!), Jordan Hoffart Speed Bump, Bump to Butter, Butter Bench, and 12ft long Adjustable rail.
We wanted to make the layout appropriate to fit all the obstacles within the 90 foot long by 40 foot wide gym. Also having the products all age & all skill level appropriate was also key, wonderful specially since ALL of our products offer just that!! During the two week rental the plan is to have "Shredquarters" for hanging out, skate jam for many of the pro riders/athletes like Christian Hosoi and Chris Cole, also a skate clinic hosted by professional skaters to help kids learn that have never stepped foot on a board to developing skills and most importantly having fun! We will be back in two weeks to dis-assemble the rental, more pictures to come!
Here's a short clip from our Instagram (@ocramps) of Austin & Brent testing out the ramp after assembly. It's solid bro!
Opening day for ShredQuarters was a huge success as Bones Love Milk skate team came to the event & tested out the course! Pictured below is Chris Cole, Cordano Russell, Zach Doelling, Mario Lopez & son, Bryce Wettstein, Christian Hosoi, and Tom Asta.
The biggest hit was the hot pink Quarter Pipe, pictured below is Lidia Rico.
Having the all time legend Christian Hosoi not only shreddin' our ramp course, but signing skate decks for all the kids was epic!
